BROOKLYN NAVY YARD

BROOKLYN, NY

20 Firefighter Injuries

This massive fire gutted a warehouse at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, sending a pall of smoke over the East River and injuring 67 firefighters.  The fire began when thousands of powder free latex gloves, imported from China, spontaneously combusted.  The incident drew national attention in that over 1,000 cases of the medical examination gloves, were shipped to hospitals and doctors offices throughout the country.  A distribution that led to three other fires.  T.J Russo Consultants was retained on behalf of the Brooklyn Navy Yard to investigate the cause of the incident and to assess the manufacturing, packaging and configuration of the gloves.
